Riverside Inn Bed and Breakfast’s tree-lined drive and the plantation home’s white columns, black shutters and swaying porch swings welcome visitors year-round to this Gallatin County retreat on the Ohio River. The house was built in 1869 by state Sen. and militia Capt. James H. McDanell Sr., a successful Warsaw businessman and politician. Today, innkeepers Kurt and Kathy Doerflinger run the historic property, which was beautifully restored and renovated in 2011, and promise an experience that melds casual elegance with true southern hospitality.
The Doerflingers say they learned long ago that one of the keys to life is to follow your passion and call it work. Originally from Ohio, Kurt and Kathy have been innkeepers at several bed and breakfasts in various states, including New York at the Chautauqua Institution, where they managed three Victorian guest houses; an ocean view B&B in Maine; and inns in Rhode Island and Connecticut. They love being innkeepers and now love sharing their Kentucky home with guests.
And what a Kentucky home! As its name implies, the property overlooks the Ohio River, and there are numerous comfortable spots to sit, relax and take in the exquisite views. Stroll through Riverside’s arboretum for an afternoon of bird watching, go cycling, enjoy a horse carriage ride, catch up on your reading in the Riverside library (or in the parlor, music room or gazebo, for that matter), play a game of pool, or indulge in the on-site spa services. From weddings and romantic retreats to girlfriends getaways and business gatherings, the Riverside Inn provides an idyllic backdrop for memory making.
No bed and breakfast is complete without, well, the breakfast and Chef Kurt makes your morning meal a three-course, gourmet affair. Fresh eggs from on-site chickens, custom coffees and teas, baked goods, quiches, French toast, strata, fresh fruit – all prepared with loving culinary care. The Doerflingers say no one ever leaves the breakfast table hungry!
